Shieling, Coire Doire Uillt

Shieling site. NM680748. Height 120m. Extensive Feannagan on south facing slope. Good shelter. Protected by stone and turf dyke with two gateways. 7 shelter sites. One is a possible still site. Possible platform. Peat workings nearby. Birch available for roofing. Description of sites given. Peat workings could be place where turfs were cut yearly for re-roofing the huts.

Hill shieling building. A single building roughly oval in shape about 4m x 2.5m. Back wall uses a rock face. Ground inside on a slope. Probably shieling area for Upper Mingary. Stonework about 0.5m high. Altitude - about 170m. Gordon Barr

See map AR 0025.3 buildings with a possible fourth one. Two are circular turf platforms 3.5m and 4m in diameter. There is a layer of stones below the grassy surface of the platforms. One building has stone foundations standing up to 1m in height. It seems to be circular on the outside with a doorway facing NE but rectangular inside (2.5 x 1.9m). One or two stunted trees nearby. Caolas Beag

Complex and well preserved sheep fank which must have been in use until fairly recently. Complete with clipping stools, cauldron and flue for melting dip compound, dip trough, platform and several compartments. The iron cauldron is in place and the flue below and the chimney hole above are well preserved. S 0150.
