sent notice to the P. at Penrith yt that the D. of Cu'  Duke of Cumberlands whole body of Horse horse was very near and would probably cut cutt them all off if not timely releived relieved,  Upon upon wch. which the P P. ordered back Cluny’s Clunys Regiment regiment of Mcphersons McPhersons together with the Athole Brigade brigade & and the Stewarts of Appin.  Cluny’s Men men were those cheifly engadged who after a fire broke in upon them with their swords. the The Glengarie Mcdonalds McDonalds, who were placed behind a stone park dike park-dike, continued to gall the Enemy’s enemy’s flank with their fire the since they could not get at them with the their swords, while the Athole & and Appin men were not so closely engadged. we our Our men would have done more execution on the Enemy enemy, had not night prevented them.;  And and learning yt that they might be overpowered overpoured by the greatly superiour supperior number of the Enemy enemy who would be augmented by more Horse horse from Wade & and Ligonier, they made avery now a quick but orderly retreat & and joined the P. at Penrith and as it was not judged proper to engage engadge their whole force till we were reinforced by our Army army from Perth,. Clanronald & and Keppoch’s Keppochs Regiments  regiments were ordered ordrd to March march back to Clifton bridge to amuse the peo. people of Penrith with abeleif a belief yt that we were all to March march back to fight  the D. Cl. Duke of Cumberland, while our main body marched on from Penrith to Carlyle Carlisle late anight at night and our two Regiments regiments viz. vizt. Clanronalds Clanronald & and Keppochs' Keppochs marched quickly af after
